What the cradle is actually protecting
Modern line pipe arrives with a factory-applied external coating — three-layer polyethylene, FBE or similar — and that coating is the pipe's entire corrosion defence for its design life. It is also soft. Every time the pipe is set down, rolled, rotated for welding or lowered into the ditch, the contact points are where the coating gets cut. Roller cradles spread the load over a wide, non-marring surface and let the pipe rotate without dragging, which is why they appear in the method statement for every stage between stringing and lowering-in.
