Cold bends, not fittings

On plant piping, a change of direction is an elbow. On a transmission pipeline it is a cold bend made in the parent pipe, because a fitting means two more welds, two more potential defects and a discontinuity in a line that may later be pigged. Cold field bending keeps the pipe continuous and the wall thickness within tolerance, and the machine that does it has to be sized for the pipe rather than adapted to it.

What governs whether a bend is acceptable

Wall thinning on the outer radius, ovality, and buckling or rippling on the inner radius are the three things the client's inspector will measure, and they are all functions of the mandrel, the shoe and the increment the machine works to — not of operator enthusiasm. The bend radius your specification allows is usually expressed in pipe diameters and is tighter for thin wall. Send us the line sizes, wall thicknesses, grade and the bending specification, and we will confirm what the machine can do before you are committed to it.

Bending runs ahead of welding

On a moving spread the bending crew works ahead of the line-up and welding crews, so the bending machine is one of the first items mobilised and often one of the last released. Plan the hire window against the survey and the ditch profile rather than against the welding schedule, or you will find you have booked it for the wrong weeks.
