Why capacity is chosen by the lift plan, not the pipe diameter
Contractors often ask for a tonnage based on the line size. The load that actually governs is the lowering-in plan: the number of machines on the string, the spacing, the boom radius at the worst point, and the dynamic allowance the lift study applies. A 24-inch line lowered in with three machines at wide spacing can demand more per machine than a larger line with five. Send us the lift plan or the pipe schedule and the ditch profile, and we will tell you which of the three capacities the job actually needs — including when a smaller machine is enough, which is usually the cheaper answer.
Side boom, pipelayer or sideboom — the same machine
The three names are used interchangeably across the industry and across nationalities on a Saudi spread. Caterpillar and its pipeline dealer network call them both pipelayers and sidebooms; European contractors tend to say side boom; American crews say pipelayer. If your scope of work, your lift study and your material requisition use different words for it, they are describing the same machine. It matters only when you are searching for one, which is why this page carries all three.
Owned, not brokered
These machines are in our own fleet. That is the difference that shows up when a spread goes down: when we tell you a 60 t can be on the right of way tomorrow morning, we are not waiting for another yard to confirm it first. Side booms are also the hardest item on a spread to source at short notice in the Kingdom, because the machines that exist are usually already committed to a project for its duration.
Operators and certification
Side booms can be supplied bare or with a certified operator. Pipelaying operators are a specific skill — travelling in formation with a suspended load along an uneven right of way is not crane work and not dozer work. We supply operators from our manpower division on the same commercial registration as the machine, so the equipment and the man are on one contract and one invoice.
